To find relevant information you will first need to identify your keywords. Keywords are words that define a topic and therefore are the words you should use when doing your online search.
Think about what you do when you research online, how do you select the words you use in your search?. Watch the following video for tips on how to choose keywords.

When choosing your keywords it is important to:

  • Plan your search by thinking about what you are really looking for. Think about the purpose of your search. The search terms you use should reflect the purpose.
  • Unpick the question to identify the best keywords. Subtract any redundant words for the question. Consider the main terms, synonyms and related words.
  • You can improve your search results by using specialised terminology. If you are new to the subject, you could pick up terminology from secondary sources.
  • Look back through any background materials to find any relevant keywords you may have forgotten.
